Cancer and Social Security Disability
With the observance of National Cancer Survivors Day on June 7, we take a moment to reflect on the staggering number of people diagnosed with this dreadful disease every year.
The Social Security Administration (SSA) strongly supports the fight against cancer and offers services to patients suffering from the disease through its disability program and its Compassionate Allowances program.
If you or a loved one needs help filing for Social Security disability (SSD) benefits, our experienced team of Social Security disability lawyers in Phoenix can help. Call us today at 1-800-503-2000 to get started.
The Compassionate Allowances List
A cancer diagnosis is often unexpected and in many cases can inhibit a persons ability to work.
The Compassionate Allowances (CAL) program was created for medical conditions that are so severe, they automatically meet Social Security disability standards, allowing for an expedited process and minimal medical information.
No additional paperwork is required to apply for CAL. When you submit your traditional Supplemental Security Income application, SSA will acknowledge that your condition is on the list and will move your application quickly through the process.
There are currently 25 types of cancer on the Compassion Allowances Conditions list with the potential for more. Some types of cancers included are:
- Metastatic brain or spinal cord cancer
- Inflammatory breast cancer
- Kidney cancer
- Metastatic bladder cancer
- Esophageal cancer
- Gallbladder cancer
- Liver cancer
- Ovarian cancer
- Among others
