The IRS has made significant strides in enhancing taxpayer services and online tools, making updates to help taxpayers and businesses thanks to Inflation Reduction Act funding, according to a news release the agency published on July 25. Some new features in the Individual Online Account area are especially notable.
IRS Aims to “Make Long-Overdue Improvements”
“Funding from the Inflation Reduction Act is helping spur innovation and improvement across the IRS to transform our operations in our work to help taxpayers and the nation,” said IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel in the press release.
“This progress can be seen in our continued expansion of our online accounts to provide more features, increased use of new digital tools, and additional special activities to help taxpayers in-person. By providing digital forms, making payments easier, and continuing work to reduce paper-based processes that have long hampered the IRS and frustrated taxpayers, our progress is accelerating to make long-overdue improvements.”
As part of these updates to taxpayer services, taxpayers will have the ability to securely file all documents, respond to notices online, and safely access and download their data and account history.
New Individual Online Account Features
Some new Individual Online Account features the IRS is expanding include:
- Giving taxpayers the ability to request an update to their Identity Protection (IP) PIN using smartphones or tablets
- Allowing taxpayers to retrieve their tax-related information from one source, including Wage & Income Account, Record of Account and Return transcripts
- Letting taxpayers view information about the status of an audit at their convenience, rather than having to call the IRS to acquire audit information
- Giving taxpayers the capability to use a Lien Payoff Calculator to access lien information, calculate their lien payoff amount, and generate a letter for downloading or printing
- …and more
The IRS is also allowing taxpayers to file new amended returns electronically such as business Forms 940, 941, 943, and 945.
