What Are Last-Minute Tips for Meeting the ERTC Filing Deadline?

There are a few Employee Retention Tax Credit (ERTC/ERC) deadlines coming up fast that you need to be aware of if you’re eligible to claim the credit and haven’t yet done so. If you want to claim it before the ERTC filing deadline in early 2024, there are a handful of tips you should keep in mind.

Tips for Meeting the ERTC Filing Deadline

First thing’s first – when is the Employee Retention Tax Credit filing deadline? There are actually two major ones coming up.

The ERTC is available to eligible employers for wages paid from March 13, 2020, through December 31, 2021. (Recovery Startup Businesses specifically can claim the ERTC for wages paid after June 30, 2021, and before January 1, 2022.) Your business may be able to retroactively claim the ERTC for wages during that time period, but there are mere months left to do so for wages from 2020.

For all quarters in 2020, the deadline to apply for the Employee Retention Tax Credit is April 15, 2024. For all quarters in 2021, the deadline is April 15, 2025.

With everything you have to do as a business owner, having just a couple of months to do all of the work involved in accurately claiming the ERTC may seem like a lot. But we’ve got a few tips that should help you meet that first ERTC filing deadline.

First of all, you’ll want to make sure you actually qualify to claim the ERTC so you don’t run into issues with the IRS later. You’ll also want to be sure you’ve got all of your documentation that’s necessary to claim the tax credit ready to go – not only will this help you file in time, but it’s also a good idea in general to have things like gross wages well-organized and available in case they need to be pulled for information with little notice.

You also might want to consider working with a trusted tax professional to claim the ERTC before that first 2024 deadline. A tax attorney can handle a lot of the application process for you and will know exactly how to turn in the strongest application possible in a shorter amount of time. They can also answer any questions you might have about the ERTC and assist you if you have specific concerns about meeting an Employee Retention Tax Credit deadline.
