At What Age Does Social Security Disability End?

Many people believe that Social Security Disability (SSD) benefits last forever. This, however, is not necessarily the case. You are able to receive Social Security Disability benefits for as long as you are disabled or until you reach age 65. Once you reach 65-years-old, your disability benefits stop and retirement benefits begin.

There are however, some conditions that could cause your disability benefits to stop early.

Why Disability Benefits Could End

The following are three reasons why disability benefits may end:

Your condition improved The Social Security Administration (SSA) will typically review your case after the first 18 months, in three years or every seven years. The amount of time between reviews is contingent upon whether your condition is anticipated to improve. If your condition improves, you may no longer be considered disabled by SSA and your benefits could end.

You were incarcerated If you go to prison in excess of thirty days, you will stop receiving SSD benefits. Once you are released, your benefits may resume if they are reinstated.

You returned to work If you are able to earn a sizable income and can return to work, your disability benefits will usually end. However, your Social Security Disability benefits do not stop immediately upon going back to work. You may try and go back to work for as much as nine months prior to losing your benefits. If you cannot sustain full-time work, your disability benefits will continue.

Keeping Your Disability Benefits

If you want the best opportunity of receiving SSD benefits until you are of retirement age, follow these steps:

  • Go to doctor visits routinely and discuss how your condition impacts daily activities.
  • Respond to Continuing Disability Review notices in a timely fashion.
  • Provide needed documentation for Continuing Disability Reviews.
  • Speak to your attorney regarding any questions you have.
