How to Get Disability Benefits for Sarcoidosis

April as National Sarcoidosis awareness month. This autoimmune disease affects nearly a million people around the world. Fortunately, for those in the U.S. there is an opportunity to receive Social Security Disability (SSD) benefits for sarcoidosis.

Sarcoidosis triggers abnormal tissue to develop in clumps called granulomas on and in the body. These microscopic granulomas may grow so big that they interfere with bodily organs like the lungs and heart. In addition to diminished organ function, they can also cause scarring that does not heal. While some people do not have serious symptoms initially, the effects of sarcoidosis can be disabling over time as the disease progresses.

Seventy percent of people diagnosed with sarcoidosis are 20 to 40 years of age, and African-Americans are more affected than white Americans. Symptoms commonly associated with this disease include skin rashes, swollen lymph nodes, metabolic issues and eye irritation. While sarcoidosis is not listed in the SSA’s Blue Book of impairments, patients may still qualify for disability benefits under different listings.

Disability Benefits for Sarcoidosis

For people who have been diagnosed with sarcoidosis and cannot work, they may be eligible for disability benefits if sarcoidosis symptoms mimic other impairment listings. For example, sarcoidosis may cause chronic pulmonary insufficiency, skin disorders, arrhythmias, congestive heart failure, vision loss and bronchiectasis with decreased lung function. These conditions are listed in the SSA’s Blue Book.

People who cannot work for at least 12 months due to this condition should document their diagnosis with their doctor and work with a disability attorney to file a claim.

If you or your loved one has been devastated by the chronic pain and fatigue of sarcoidosis, you are not alone. If sarcoidosis makes it impossible for you to work, contact a Social Security disability attorney at Dayes Law Firm PC for help getting disability benefits for sarcoidosis.
