Will Moving to a New State Impact my Benefits?

If you are receiving Social Security Disability or Supplemental Security Income, you may be wondering just how moving to another state could impact those benefits. Will you have to reapply? Will you receive less? Our Phoenix disability attorneys can help answer those questions.

If you are receiving Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), moving to a new state will not affect your benefits. However, you will need to make sure you change your address so that you continue receiving important correspondence from the Social Security Administration.

Anyone receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI) may be affected when moving to a new state. First, your SSI monthly payment will likely change. Though it is a federal benefit, most states add a small amount of money, also known as a state supplementary payment, to the federal SSI payment. If the state you were living in paid a supplement, but your new state pays less or none at all, your compensation may be less than before.

Additionally, if your state has no supplementary payment, the federal income limit is $733. This means that you may have to have less income in your new state. Every state except West Virginia, North Dakota, Mississippi and West Virginia currently pays a state supplement to its residents who receive SSI.

If you’re concerned that your move could impact your benefits, speaking with a disability claims representative in Phoenix, AZ may help you determine if your payment will be impacted and by how much.

If you’re moving and your disability claim is still pending, moving out of state could delay your case or possibly even change the outcome. If your claim for SSDI or SSI has been denied, or you are encountering difficulties re-filing your application, contact Dayes Law Firm PC. We can help you obtain the benefits you deserve.
