Government Business Support Programs Beyond ERTC

If you’re a business owner who was able to apply for the Employee Retention Tax Credit (ERC/ERTC), you’ve probably sung its praises to other employers who needed a financial boost after those first few months of the COVID-19 pandemic health crisis. While the ERTC has indeed been a great economic lifeline for a lot of businesses, there are other government business support programs beyond ERTC that many small businesses can also look into for assistance.

Small Business Support Programs Through the Government

The United States Department of the Treasury advertises the Employee Retention Tax Credit as an important small business tax credit program on its website. But on the same page, it notes the Paid Leave Credit as another program businesses can take advantage of.

“The American Rescue Plan extends through September 2021 the availability of Paid Leave Credits for small and midsize businesses that offer paid leave to employees who may take leave due to illness, quarantine, or caregiving,” the Treasury Department website states. “Businesses can take dollar-for-dollar tax credits equal to wages of up to $5,000 if they offer paid leave to employees who are sick or quarantining.”

Plus, under an Assistance for Small Businesses page in the Policy Issues section of its site, the Treasury Department also highlights the Paycheck Protection Program.

“The Paycheck Protection Program is providing small businesses with the resources they need to maintain their payroll, hire back employees who may have been laid off, and cover applicable overhead,” the agency noted. “The Paycheck Protection Program prioritizes millions of Americans employed by small businesses by authorizing up to $659 billion toward job retention and certain other expenses.”

Other Government Business Support Programs Beyond ERTC

There are many other opportunities through the government to get business support as well, from grants, to loans, to contracting dollars, and more. While the ERTC is a crucial program, other options have been around to assist businesses for much longer.

The United States Chamber of Commerce has a page on its website about 45 different programs that could benefit your small business. One such program is the Women-Owned Small Business (WOSB) Federal Contracting Program, which aims to award at least 5 percent of federal contracting dollars to women-owned small businesses every year.

The U.S. Department of Commerce Minority Business Development Agency (MBDA) also offers grants and loans that are meant to help minority-owned businesses and are offered throughout the year. This and the WOSB program are just two examples of avenues small businesses could pursue for government support outside of the ERTC program.
