What Are Compassionate Allowances?

For those suffering from a severe disability or medical condition, access to immediate disability benefits is most likely a necessary lifeline. For this reason, the Social Security Administration (SSA) established the Compassionate Allowances (CAL) Initiative as a way to expedite the approval process for severe conditions that will obviously qualify for benefits.

If you have applied for Social Security Disability benefits, but were denied, our reputable disability benefits lawyers in Phoenix can help you determine why your claim was denied and will work with you to compile a strong appeal to help you get the benefits you need.

Call 1-800-503-2000 to get started today.

In an effort to uphold its commitment to providing benefits quickly to those in need, the SSA created CAL for applicants whose conditions are so serious that they obviously meet the administrations definition of a disability and meet all of the requirements to receive either Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits.

The SSA keeps a list of CAL conditions that it regularly updates. These conditions are chosen based on information from feedback from the Social Security and Disability Determination Services communities, public outreach hearings, research from the National Institutes of Health and the guidance of medical and scientific experts.

Some conditions included on the Compassionate Allowances Conditions list are:

  • Several types of cancer, including leukemia, breast cancer, bladder cancer and esophageal cancer, among others
  • Early on-set of Alzheimer’s Disease
  • Spinal Muscular Atrophy

Because CAL is not a separate program from SSD or SSI, there is no additional paperwork that needs to be completed during the application process. The SSA makes an expedited decision based on readily available objective medical information.
