Disability Benefits for Degenerative Disc Disease

Degenerative disc disease is one of the most common conditions for which people apply for disability benefits. However, despite the high volume of claims for this condition, getting disability benefits is not easy.

This condition is common with age, when intervertebral discs become dehydrated and shrink. Without the cushion provided by the discs between the bones of the spine, individuals can experience pain, spasms or inflammation. It can be difficult to sit or stand for periods of time or to walk, lift or bend.

However, because this pain can come and go, or can resolve within a matter of months with the appropriate treatment, degenerative disc disease is not listed in the Social Security Administration’s (SSA) blue book of impairment listings.

Qualifying for Benefits

It can be especially challenging for an applicant under 50 years of age to win disability benefits because the SSA believes that many people who are affected by this condition are able to return to work.

In order to qualify for disability benefits for back problems, the applicant must experience severe issues, like needing assistance walking or experiencing specific nerve-related issues.

If your degenerative disc disease has led to further back problems, it may be possible to get benefits for one of those conditions, which are included in the SSA’s impairment listings. These can include:

  • Herniated disc
  • Spinal stenosis
  • Nerve root compression
  • Arachnoiditis

In order to qualify for disability benefits for one of these conditions, the applicant must meet the symptoms and requirements included in the listing.

It may also be possible to demonstrate the debilitating effects of your condition through extensive medical records. When evaluating your claim, the claims examiner will look for imaging studies like x-rays, MRIs and CAT scans that can prove the extent of your injuries and pain.

It is vital that your doctor provide detailed notes about how your condition impairs your ability to work and the severity of your pain. Without this, it will be very difficult to get the benefits you need.

If you are struggling to get disability benefits, our accomplished Social Security disability benefits lawyers can help you file an application or appeal a denied claim. We will gather all of your medical records and work to build a strong claim on your behalf.
