Types of Financial Support You Can Receive in Addition to SSD

Social Security Disability benefits are a vital lifeline for those who can no longer work because of a disabling condition. Unfortunately, the wait to find out if you are approved for benefits can take several months, or more. During this time, you may need to seek out other forms of financial support.

There are various public assistance programs you may qualify for during your wait, many of which you may continue to receive even after you are approved for disability benefits.

These programs can offset concerns about medical coverage, how to pay for food and even how to obtain necessary cash to pay for rent or utilities.

Types of Additional Support

Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP) – Many applicants waiting to get disability benefits may qualify for SNAP or food stamps. You may also be able to continue receiving these benefits once you are approved for disability. Many states have online applications for SNAP benefits or a state’s social services that can help you with applying.

State Temporary Disability – While you await your disability decision, you may be able to receive temporary disability benefits. Contact your local or state social services department. It may also be named the Department of Health and Human Services.

Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) – This program is offered by states to provide cash benefits on a monthly basis for families experiencing financial hardships and who meet eligibility rules. Reach out to your local or state social service office for more information.

Medical Insurance – If you are in financially need, you may qualify for Medicaid or another type of state health insurance. Some health clinics provide patients with services on a sliding scale. Talk to your doctor about your disability application and your financial situation. You may be able to receive discount prescriptions or free samples as well.

Although many people may want to apply for unemployment benefits, this is not a good idea. Social Security Disability is based on the idea that your condition prohibits you from being able to work, while unemployment benefits are only available to those actively seeking employment.

The disability lawyers at Dayes Law Firm PC are well-versed in the requirements for getting disability and can help you determine what additional forms of income you may qualify for without affecting your application. Contact a Phoenix disability benefits lawyer at our law firm today for help applying for benefits or if you have been denied the benefits you need.
